To assess the level of growth hormone in the body, several tests are conducted. Some of them include somatotropin hormone test, growth hormone stimulation test, growth hormone suppression test and many more. In this article, we will give you a brief idea on each of these tests and for this, we will take up each one by one.
Somatotropin Test:
This test helps to find out if there is any imbalance of HGH – human growth hormone in the body. It helps to analyze if there is a deficiency or excessive production of human growth hormone. In this test, a sample of blood is taken an hour later after the patient has had some sleep. This is done to ensure that the readings are accurate. Talking about the ideal level of human growth hormone in case of men is 5 ng/ml and for women it is lower than 10 ng/ml. For children, the normal level of HGH is 10 ng/ml and for infants, it ranges between 10 and 40 ng/ml. when the HGH level is above the normal range, it leads to gigantism and when it is lower than the range, it causes dwarfism.
Somatomedin C Test:
This test helps to ascertain the level of human growth hormone in the blood. It detects the abnormalities in the pituitary gland and also helps to determine if the person undergoing the test has the problem of acromegaly. There are no criteria as regards to time or level of activity. It can be conducted at any point of time whenever it is convenient for the patient to undergo the test.
As per this test, the normal level of growth hormone in the blood for adults is 42-110 ng/ml. for females in the age group of 1 to 8 should have 7-110 ng/ml level of HGH in their blood and for age group 9 to 10 years, it is best if you have 39-186 ng/ml HGH. For boys in the age group of 1 to 8, the normal level of HGH is 4-87 ng/ml and for boys falling in the age group of 9 to 10, the right level of human growth hormone is 26-98 ng/ml.
Growth Hormone Stimulation Test
This test is also known as arginine test or insulin tolerance test. It is basically conducted to assess as to what extent the body is capable of producing human growth hormone.
In this test, numerous samples of blood are taken; however, this is done after giving the patient an insulin injection. To identify the growth hormone deficiency, this test is believed to be one of the best options. The ideal level of HGH human growth hormone as per this test is 10 ng/ml. If the level of growth hormone is found to be less than the normal range, it means it is the case of pituitary deficiency.
Growth hormone suppression test:
Also known as glucose loading test, it is conducted to assess the baseline level of HGH. In this test, two separate blood samples are taken; first is done before giving glucose and the other after glucose has been injected. The normal level is 3 ng/ml and if the test results show a level greater than 3 ng/ml, it is an indication of acromegaly syndrome.
So, these are some of the common tests conducted to assess the exact situation of growth hormone in the body.
